Books, movies, and songs have shaped my life and work, and given me some of my happiest moments. I’ve tried to gather all the best stuff on one page.

I’ve reviewed many books on Goodreads. I’ve also written about the best books I read in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018.
Movies // TV
I’ve rated every movie or TV series I remember watching on IMDB.
Top five for each:
Movies
- Life in a Day
- The Act of Killing
- The Incredibles
- Hereditary
- Kung Fu Hustle
Television
- Sousou no Frieren
- Kaguya-Sama: Love is War
- Avatar: The Last Airbender // The Legend of Korra
- Taskmaster
- The Good Place
Anime // Manga
A surprising percentage of the most beautiful things I’ve seen in my life were created by Japanese artists. Everything here is in the top ~10% of everything I’ve ever watched or read.
Anime and manga can be hard to get into, so I’ve tried to arrange the following lists by a combination of accessibility (can you understand this without knowledge of other works in the genre, or Japanese culture more generally?) and quality (is it so good that understanding the context doesn’t matter?).
But don’t pay too much attention to the rankings. Just click on some titles and read or watch whatever story sounds interesting. (Or, if it’s a comedy, search it on YouTube and see if you like the clips.)
A few notes before you start:
- My favorite platform for browsing manga is Mangadex.
- Anime can be a bit slow, and often has a lot of still shots that amplify that feeling. Don’t be afraid to speed things up; I use Video Speed Controller for this.
- If you want a personalized recommendation, or more details on anything here, ask me!
Anime (Comedy)
- Kaguya-Sama: Love is War (absurdist romcom; the best manga ever written and one of the best anime ever made; endlessly inventive)
- Spy x Family (brilliant character writing — including for a small child, which is very hard to do)
- Nichijou (sketch comedy, fantastic animation, here’s a sample)
- Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! (sweet, heartfelt, the only realistic story in this section)
- Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (I don’t think this would work without the original, but it definitely works)
- Letterkenny (this is Canadian, but it counts as anime, here’s a sample, skip the third episode)
- Shoresy (the spiritual sequel to Letterkenney, a better show but I’d still start with the original)
- The Tatami Galaxy (college life, bleak but amusing, incredible script)
- Daily Lives of High School Boys (Nichijou with boys and realism, here’s a sample)
- The Dangers in My Heart (as funny and awkward and romantically confused as actual ninth grade)
- Azumanga Daioh (cute, character-driven, great faces, here’s a sample, here’s another sample)
- Tonari No Seki-Kun (very short episodes, perfect if you want a small bite)
- Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei (absolute chaos, how do you even make something like this?)
Anime (Drama)
- Violet Evergarden (fiction has made me cry six times; two of them were Violet Evergarden)
- Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! (the best depiction of artsy high school students in any medium?)
- Chihayafuru (the best anime about being an obsessive gamer, with a lot more to offer besides)
- March Comes In Like a Lion (chess, depression, hope)
- Oshi no Ko (hard to summarize, just try the compelling first episode + insanely viral theme song)
- Ping Pong the Animation (ping pong, animation)
- Toradora! (adorable, great for couples, here’s a good summary)
- Bloom Into You (lesbians, power dynamics, tragically unfinished)
- Odd Taxi (gritty urban mystery)
- Aggretsuko (millennials, death metal, Fenneko)
- K-On! (girls with guitars)
- Shoshimin: How to Become Ordinary (so strange that I had to review it right away before it slipped out of mind)
- Welcome to the NHK (realistic portrayal of social anxiety, well-made but very dark)
- Bamboo Blade (girls with wooden swords)
- My Teen Romantic Comedy Snafu (love triangle, extremely slow burn)
Anime (Action / Adventure / Fantasy, <50 episodes)
- Sousou no Frieren (adventures, memory, excellent characters, the #1 anime of all time on MyAnimeList, I could go on)
- Mob Psycho 100 (psychic warfare, life lessons, beautiful fight scenes)
- Dandadan (as unpredictable as Chainsaw Man, more sugar and less salt)
- Chainsaw Man (the second-best-looking show on this list after Frieren; jaw-dropping violence, teenage hormones, body horror, all of it wildly unpredictable)
- Vinland Saga (Vikings, revenge, acceptance)
- Blue Eye Samurai (third-best-looking, might have a better script than Chainsaw Man, much depends on the second season)
- Kino’s Journey (original > remake; postmodern road trip)
- Dr. Stone (rebuilding civilization after the apocalypse)
- Made in Abyss (cute kids go cliff-diving into Hell)
- Clevatess (realistically dark fantasy, as grim and hopeful as true history)
- Beastars (an R-rated version of Zootopia set in a high school drama club)
- Ranking of Kings (fairytale with twists for days)
- Cowboy Bebop (Firefly before Firefly)
- Re: Creators (existential metafiction with explosions)
- Black Lagoon (tropical gangsters, try the English dub)
- Puella Magi Madoka Magica (magical girls; not much plot, but every fight is a masterpiece)
- One Punch Man (superhero action comedy)
- Kengan Ashura (over-the-top martial arts spectacle)
- Baki (over-the-top martial arts spectacle; clunkier than Kengan Ashura, but if you like one you’re probably going to like both)
Anime (Action / Adventure / Fantasy, >50 episodes)
- Hunter x Hunter (genre-defying hero’s journey, wildly unpredictable)
- Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (if there’s a consensus “best anime of all time,” this is it; HxH peaks higher, but FMAB is more consistent)
- Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (cult favorite, hard to explain; start with YouTube clips to get the flavor)
- Attack on Titan (Medieval steampunk eldritch horror)
- Naruto (the Harry Potter of anime — many literary flaws, but it still just works)
- My Hero Academia (magic wizard school for superheroes, falls apart toward the end)
Anime (Movies)
These are more accessible than TV series, so I’ve made them their own category.
- The work of Hayao Miyazaki
- Spirited Away
- Princess Mononoke
- Anything else
- Look Back (just one hour, beautiful, show it to the artist in your life)
- Summer Wars
- Your Name
- The First Slam Dunk (captures the feeling of being an anime parent watching anime high school sports, something I hadn’t known I wanted but was grateful to receive)
- A Silent Voice
Manga (Comedy)
- Kaguya-Sama: Love is War (the pinnacle)
- Azumanga Daioh (manga > anime, buy the whole thing in one volume)
- Spy x Family (anime > manga, but as of 2023, the manga has lots of extra content and is still great)
- The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You (lives up to every part of its title, and that really x 5 shouldn’t work but somehow does)
- Flag: most of this list is fanservice-free, but this manga is… the opposite of that.
- The Legend of the Strongest Man Kurosawa (scruffy homeless guys dole out ramshackle justice to bullies; the slow pacing plays up how important life’s minor dramas are to people with few plans)
- Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-San (the perfect middle school romance)
Manga (Drama)
- Buddha (a literary masterpiece, among the best graphic novels ever)
- Blue Period (learning to paint, learning to live; manga > anime)
- Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! (art and capitalism; anime and manga both essential)
- Otoyomegatari (a gorgeous travelogue through 19th-century Asia)
- Space Brothers (a love letter to astronauts, engineers, and scientists)
- Bakuman (a love letter to commercial artists and editors)
- Spirit Circle (two lives tangled up in history; almost made me cry)
- March Comes In Like a Lion (beautiful opening and midgame, gets bogged down later)
- Nickelodeon (magical-realist flash fiction, can be read in one sitting)
- Silver Spoon (farming!)
- I Had That Same Dream Again (the meaning of life; can be read in one sitting)
- Golden Kamuy (hunting for gold and fighting bears in the Japanese tundra)
- Jumbo Max (a low-key Japanese take on Breaking Bad, short enough to be a novel)
- Yugami-kun ni wa Tomodachi ga Ina (neurodivergent romance)
- Kakukaku Shikajika (remembering a beloved teacher; definitely made me cry)
- Beck (rock and roll)
Manga (Action / Adventure / Fantasy)
- Dr. Stone (anime > manga, but the manga is complete and the anime will take many years to finish)
- Eyeshield 21 (the best sports manga, not close)
- Vinland Saga (anime > manga, both excellent)
- Chainsaw Man (anime > manga)
- Beastars (manga = anime, but the manga is finished and the anime might not)
- Death Note (supernatural detective story)
- Assassination Classroom (learning to kill, learning to live)
- Teppu (short, sweet story of emotional catharsis through MMA)
- One Punch Man (manga > anime)
- Naruto (manga = anime)
Manga (Child Gangsters, yes, this is a genre)
- Angel Densetsu (fast-paced comedy, wonderful ending)
- Kyou Kara Ore Wa (the manga equivalent of a meandering 19th-century novel)
- Holyland (ludicrous drama, semi-real martial arts)
- Tokyo Revengers (emotional catharsis through punching)

Subnormality is hard to get into, but it’s worth the effort once you’re through the early comics. Here are a few of my favorites, all of which can be enjoyed without reading the rest:
The Real World
Laser Tag: My favorite thing to do in physical space. I hope it becomes a professional sport once we live in a post-scarcity society.
Frisbee: My second-favorite thing to do in physical space.
Food: Hot chocolate from Spain, sourdough from San Francisco, sushi from anywhere, protein bars from everywhere.
